There is no one way to make it.  However, understanding the basics will give you a foundation to build your career on.

Make sure you read Part I and Part II before continuing on.

Step 3:
Find your niche(s)

What makes you an asset?

What can you bring to the table that separates you from the pack? Is it your hard work ethic? Your ability to recognize/set trends? Your ability to bring people together? Motivation?

It’s okay if you don’t know what it is just yet, but keep working until you figure it out.

Master it.

Once you know which skill(s) of yours set you apart from the rest, become the best at it. Take classes. Read tutorials. Don’t be afraid to get messy.

It’s okay if you have multiple crafts (as I speak from experience). However, master only one at a time. Being a jack of all trades and a master of none is a fast track to working at Starbucks for the duration of your “career”.

Always continue to grow.

Once you’ve mastered something, continue evolving in it. If you’re a great R&B songwriter, try diving into Country. If you are a master Hip-Hop producer, dabble in a little Rock & Roll. If you’re a pro on the creative side, start learning more about the business side.

Don’t completely abandon your roots, but don’t box yourself into them. Knowledge is power.
