Today marks the anniversary of my mother’s birth. I am forever grateful for the sacrifices she made as a single parent to ensure the safety and well-being of me and my sister.

Growing up on the Far South Side of Chicago was not easy, but she made sure we were well-rounded despite our surroundings. Beyond feeding and clothing us, she exposed us to the world outside of our neighborhood through museums, extra-curriculars, athletics (which I hated but now appreciate), and travel.

We weren’t rich by any means, as she was a school teacher. However, she did more with less than most people could. With two masters degrees under her belt (one of which she earned while pregnant with me), she is a true example of what you can achieve with hard work and determination.

We bump heads like crazy and often don’t understand each other, mostly because she was an athlete and I am an artist. However, even when we disagree, I know that her heart is always in the right place.

I get my drive, passion, morals and values from her. She is the reason I am here today. I couldn’t have asked for a better mother.

Happy Birthday, Mom.
