I have been a fan of India.Arie since her Acoustic Soul album. When her Voyage To India album came out, one song that remained on repeat was “Get It Together”. It was probably more of a subconscious thing back then (as I was in high school), but the first lyric always stuck with me: “One shot to your heart without breaking your skin / No one has the power to hurt you like your kin”.

It’s the lyric that popped into my head when I got a phone call from a relative I don’t really consider family. I’ll discuss that topic in a later post.

It’s funny how a simple phone call can trigger years of repressed resentment.

After calming down a bit, I went and looked up the rest of that verse’s lyrics, and I have to say: India hit the nail right on the head. It’s up to me to release the negative energy and move forward.

One shot to your heart without breaking your skin
No one has the power to hurt you like your kin
Kept it inside, didn’t tell no one else
Didn’t even wanna admit it to yourself
And now your chest burns and your back aches
From 15 years of holding the pain
And now you only have yourself to blame
If you continue to live this way
