Growing your audience as a musician is harder now more than ever. Being authentic and unique will set you apart from others, but the methods you use to build your fanbase can make all the difference.

Alex Eynstone aka The Awakened Creative presented the idea of the fan funnel, which breaks down a fanbase into three tiers. Most musicians try to go straight for Tier 3, but taking it one step at a time will result in a stronger fan base with people who will actually support your craft.

1. Followers

These are the strangers you’ve turned into casual listeners. To grow this group, you have to cast a wide net with quality content (covers, open verses, amazing performances, etc.)

2. Fans

To convert followers into fans, you have to bring them into your world and let them get to know you on a more personal level. This is accomplished by engagement: tell stories, give behind-the-scenes content, reply to comments and DMs, live shows (and/or live streams).

3. BIG Fans

Once they’re fans and they’ve bought in, now you can get them to support you directly. Provide experiences they can engage with and support: shows, events, merch, etc.
